Q: Where did you get your idea from? What does it represent?
A: I got my idea from K-pop. I was thinking about the prompt to make a reliquary. I made a stand for a light stick. Each K-pop group has their own light stick design. When you bring them to the concert they connect them all to the light system and it’s like a light show in the crowd. They don’t stand up well on their own so I made a stand to display it. The concept for the band’s lightstick that I made this for has a space pirate theme so I took inspiration from that for the design elements.
Q:What technologies, software and processes did you use?
A: I tried many programs and found them frustrating and ultimately chose nomad sculpt. I chose it because it has similar controls to procreate which I find more user friendly. I didn’t have to watch as many tutorials of this software to achieve what I wanted to do.I started with squares and shapes as base then manipulated them to create wave shapes and used the cut tool to create the hole for it to stand on. I used inflate for details, I used the painting feature, and I inserted a photo to use as a background. I used procreate to put the lightstick into a context/environment instead of 3D printing.
Q:What challenges did you encounter? What would you do differently next time?
A: Patience was a challenge. 3D scanning was a challenge. It was too shiny to pick up the surface with the 3D scanner. I wanted to use the light stick to scale the stand to it and build around it but it didn’t work out. The scanner is a bitch. I would not do a box. With the reliquary theme I was making an object to hold/display something. It would be cool to make my own character or something like that.
Q:What did you learn?
A: I learned how to digitally sculpt something and how to 3D scan. I learned skills I can apply to future projects.
Q:What are you most proud of?
A: The paint job I’m most proud of. I worked really hard on it.
